Boy Scouts 100

The Boy scouts of America

The Boy scouts of America have now been around for a century’s time and still their standards and practices live on. The Boy scouts goal has been and remains to train young children and men in proper citizenship, development of personal character, and independence through participating in wide ranges of activities, programs, and career-oriented training programs. These career training programs work in partnership with local organizations.

Younger members called the “Scout method” is part of the program to teach Scouting values like trust, citizenship, conservation, and outdoors skills, through a variety of activities like camping, canoeing, swimming, and hiking. The Boy Scouts of America offers the program called “Learning for Life” which is a non-traditional subsidiary that provides in-school and career education. The Boy scouts of America operate traditional Scouting through units sponsored and operated by different organizations such as churches, clubs, civic centers, educational organizations, etc. Units are led by a voluntary staff that is supported by local councils using both paid professionals and also volunteers. The influence of Scouting on American society is frequently cited by both its advocates and critics. Critics have accused the Boy Scouts of America’s membership obligations to be unfitting and unfair, resulting in litigations by numerous state and federal courts. The Supreme Court has settled on a judgment that since the Boy Scouts of America are a private association, the Boy Scouts of America can set its own membership standards under the Constitutional right to freedom of association. This is still contested by parents and remains a constant ordeal that arises. The organization has managed to stay afloat thanks to volunteers participating and giving their time and effort in order to make their chapter of Boy Scouts of America work and work well. The fact that it is a private organization makes it a target for parents in the case of a child injury no matter how minor or severe.

100 years of badges

The badge has declared that you have achieved the knowledge and skill of that trait and there for you get to wear it like a general wears war time medals or like an Olympian wears their medals proudly. The fact that Boy scouts get to work towards goals helps to pave the way in achieving future goals that they will set throughout their life. The Boy scouts of America has caught flak from fat ass mothers that think the Boy scouts of America just brainwashes children to prepare them for the armed forces. These are the same women who neglect to properly teach their sons and daughter basic skills that will benefit them throughout life. The fact is that many Boy scouts go on to lead very fruitful lives as they are raised with the mindset of good work ethics as well as team work and for this they make great soldiers but even better leaders in medicine, law, government, and science. Boy scouts have had a great record of producing well rounded individuals that go on to lead in their fields of employment. The Boy scouts have had their problems yet the worst problems is the fear of lawsuits which has taken away so many activities that the boy scouts use to take part in. The fact is that boy scouts need to be in the wilderness leaving about nature and all the skills it takes to survive in nature yet they are mostly constrained to a class room where they work on boring assignments. With attorneys and money hungry parents we see the boy scouts being held captive in a state of trying not to get hurt pushing a number two pencil. These young scouts have been cooped up in a class room and are trying to keep their minds in check while having to do the exact same thing they were doing earlier and thus just coming off as extra work instead of extracurricular activity since there isn’t much activity going on at all.

How the Boy Scouts of America got their start

The Boy Scouts of America organization was started in 1910 by a Chicago publisher named William Boyce. At that time of its conception in the states, there were other loosely structured youth organizations. Some outdoor oriented programs were using the name “Boy Scout” and some using others, and there were already a number of troops using several different variations of the British Scouts. William Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America and turned it into more of a business structure. William Boyce based the headquarters in Washington, DC, rather than Chicago and worked to recruit key youth professionals to design and operate the program professionally and like a business. William Boyce then provided key funding for the infancy of the organization in order to get it off the ground.

The YMCA stepped into help operate the Boy Scouts of America during its first years when it was fledgling. YMCA executive Edgar Robinson was first to suggest that William Boyce use the YMCA as it was already in a position to provide structure to his idea of the Boy Scouts of America. Robinson set up the first Boy Scouts of America office in Manhattan, and recruited official John Alexander to be the Boy Scouts of America’s first managing secretary. Boy Scouts of America then quickly established a central office and worked on developing a temporary handbook that all Scouts could use as a basis for outdoor education. They also began campaigning to absorb the other outdoor-types of youth organizations into the Boy Scouts of America. Only one organization held out past 1912 that tried not to join which was publisher William Randolph Hearst’s military oriented group called US Boy Scout organization and was founded three months after the Boy Scouts of America in 1910. Boy scouts of America turn 100 making them old scouts

A keystone of American society passed its centennial mark as it still continues to be a youth teaching organization set out to teach basic life skills as well as prep our youth for exploration and survival. These basic skills have been proven to produce well rounded young individuals that as a majority grow up to lead fulfilling lives and descent standing citizens of society. As boy scouts of America in the past they have gathered goods during wartime as well as plant hundreds of victory gardens. Boy scouts have grown up to me top leaders in their fields as well as professional soldiers in the United States armed forces. With so much at stake in a young man’s life it is important to guide them in the right path to make the most of themselves and strive to deliver their all. We constantly see a lack in parental skills as children are growing into young adults having no form of guidance and nothing to put their skills to the test in order to make them strive for what’s better. The boy scouts of America have fought the media and have caught flack for divulging that they are a Christian based organization yet their camps and classes work on building leadership skills and teaching survival as well as the need for conservation in nature. The pluses of boy scouts of America are the social skills and the friendships made between scouts.  The fact that this organization has lasted 100 years and still continues to go strong speaks well for the organization and helps us to appreciate the foresight of the organization in working to build our youth.
